URGENT CALL FOR SOLIDARITY
In Belém, State
of Para-Brazil, 18 farmers are in prison
since 26/0/2009. There are 16 men and 2 women.
In
Tucuruí (Pará), close to the dam, 200 people remain camped,
demanding the release of the imprisoned
comrades and the resumption of negotiations.
The occupation of
the worksite has been organized by local residents who have been
suffering since the construction of the dam 25 years ago and still
today fight for the respect of their rights and proper living
conditions in the region.
During all this
period, big multinational companies are benefiting enormously from
subsidized cheap energy – ALCOA and VALE pay on average R$ 0.05 per
KWh while the Brazilian people pay ten times more.
Recently, an
Official Commission documented the numerous cases of human rights
violations in the Tucurui area for all these decades.
In this
extraordinary situation, where we
fight for the release of our people, our political prisoners, where
we keep the solidarity camp working day and night and at the same
time trying to achieve the resumption of negotiations, we are
forced to ask for your help.
You can join your
voice by signing and sending the annexed petition to the authorities
-
des.romulo.nunes@tj.pa.gov.br
and we also appeal for financial support for the maintenance
of the camp and the families and lawyers of the imprisoned comrades.
