MAB in the
World Social Forum 2009
Panel: “In defence
of the Amazon and for the energy sovereignty of the people”
30/09, at 12:00, UFPA Básico, building FB,
room F2
Next
week during the various spaces in the World Social Forum (WSF), the
Movement of Dam Affected People (MAB) will be debating the issue of
energy sovereignty as a human right, social and environmental rights
from dam construction in the Amazon region and the real interests
behind these projects. According to José Josivaldo Alves de Oliveira
from the national coordination of MAB “The panel In defence of
the Amazon and for the energy sovereignty of the people proposes
the expansion of the debate which should become a permanent issue
for social movements and the general society. We understand that
energy sovereignty requires profound transformations in the energy
consumption patterns and in the structure of the Brazilian energy
sector”.
In
addition the panel will debate the implementation of big
infrastructure projects, like the hydroelectric plants in Madeira
River, the Tucuruí (PA) and Samuel (RO) which on top of the
environmental impacts as in the case of the Balbina dam (AM) – one
of the biggest environmental disasters in the history of Brazil -,
prioritize the supply of electro-intensive industries instead of the
general population. According to Josivaldo “thousands of affected
people from the Tucuruí dam, 20 years after its construction, still
remain without electricity. And worst of all the biggest part of the
energy produced there goes to Vale and US company Alcoa”.
In
addition to this panel, MAB will participate to other activities,
amongst them the table “Criminalization of protest and social
movements” which aims to analyze the various methods of
criminalization of social movements, relate these methods to other
repressive practices and propose resistance instruments to this
tendency.

Popular assemblies in the regions of hydroelectric dams in the
Amazonian region
Since
last Wednesday (21/01) dam affected people from the Amazonian region
are mobilizing in assemblies and protests wanting to denounce human
rights violations and the impacts of dam construction in the region.
The coordination of MAB stated that “we want to bring the issue in
the WSF and inform international authorities who might be present.
We need to find solutions for the problems caused by these
projects”.
